Thursday Schedule

Tomorrow, we will be having a regular Thursday schedule, meaning no 4-core. Because there is no 4-core, in conjuction with Scare Faire, there will not be a Research Check. Because Purther won't be in class tomorrow, here is the schedule for his class:

Sit in Better Budgets Groups
  1. 15-20 minutes to finish #38
  2. 30 minutes Bill Info
    • group activity (Model Assembly)
    • read only the summary
  3. 20-25 minutes: How A Bill Becomes A Law
    • Model Assembly
    • #40 in Notebook
Here is the link to the site for the Bill Info Activity: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/bilinfo.html

From Ms. Ortega:
  1. Tomorrow is animal ear day.  You could bring Mickey ears, or some other type of animal ear headband.  You could also bring some paper (felt or other material) ears that you have cut out.  If someone can bring a bunch of bobby pins, all we'll need to do is clip the ears onto our hair.
  2. Please bring Halloween Decoration materials by tomorrow.  Everyone who does will get extra credit.
From Ms. Melogno:

Google Groups has not let me upload files or change content for the past two days; not surprising because it's always been a buggy product.  I started a GoogleSite to post the documents I promised you in class:  https://sites.google.com/site/ipolyphysics/

Model Assembly Componet 1: Dicovering your Constituents

Title: Model Assembly Component 1: Discovering your Constituency Feedback
Label: Feedback

a. Something positive
• I was impressed with the interviews students pulled off in the short period of time.

b. Questions to consider
• Did all the information each student present help them answer the DQs?
• Did your PowerPoint violate the rule of 3 on any of the slides?

c. What did work
• Many  of the PowerPoints included only photos taken by the students.
• Interviews were useful in most presentations
• The title slides looked good and in most cases the reporter did the intro effectively
• Some groups cited their source as they presented
• Speaker notes in general were fine in most presentations and everybody made the 5 minute minimum

d. What didn't work
• Concluding a paper or a presentation is significant.  Saying you are done is not a conclusion.  How should you conclude?  There is debate on this question.  When I think of concluding, I think of a conclusion including these two parts.
(1) Summarizing the essential points
(2) Finding something of value for future use
• The source slide did not work out how I had hoped. For future presentations, I will be more consistent with the senior project stuff and have you talk about three sources during the presentations versus showing a slide at the end.  I saw this happen in this presentation when you all discussed your interview.
• Not all groups used the rule of 3 (1/3 rule) and the speaker notes effectively
• Consider where you may stand in a classroom before presenting to make sure all students can hear and see you.
• Technology issues:  Check prior to school starting or the day before to make sure there are no issues.

e. Finding Value
• Remember your city!  Your job is to represent the interests of your city in future parts of the Model Assembly.    If necessary, continue to do research on your city as more questions are raised.
• The components build on each other and in the last component (Simulation), you are expected to use the 7 components before in this experience.  This is similar to how I had you work in groups of 6 or 7 at the end of the Xlandia problem and use all the information we learned from prior lessons in the one activity.

Because we will be playing againest West again, let's give them a run for the money! We will also have a research check on Friday so please bring your 3 sources.

Don't forget that three of our seniors have started clubs on campus.
Be sure to check out the I-poly Companion Club in Ortega's room. Give back to our community by mentoring underclassmen, especially the freshmen. Any quetions? Ask either Ortega or Eric Torres.
Check out the Tutoring Club in Melogno's room everyday in lunch. Be tutored or be the tutor. For details speak to David Rodgers.
Wanna show off your artistic talents? Head on over to the Ipoly Illustraters' Guild in Pang's room. For details contact Pang or Leo Mendoza.

Don't forget that our class reps are selling pizza in the quad at lunch every Monday and Thursday. Be sure to buy a slice; the money raised goes towards the senior class. Blog Due Monday 8A.M.

I just need to say that you were awesome at the volleyball game today;  I couldn't believe how quickly you caught up.  We really gave West House a run for their money!  We'll be posting some pics early next week, so stay tuned.  Also, email me if you have some fun ideas for how to show our talents in house competitions.  Take care, Lorelei

P.S.  Camping this weekend...will not respond to emails until Sunday evening : )

Title:  Second Interview Questions
Label:  Interviews

What five questions will you ask your service learning mentor?  These questions should help you to learn about your mentor's background as it pertains to your topic.  Please clearly number these, starting a new line for every question.

In addition, please email me an essential question draft by 8 A.M. Monday.  Remember that essential questions must 1) be open ended, 2) take a stance, and 3) ask something that is worth a year's worth of research and crosses disciplines (i.e. make-up artistry might involve art, science, and sociology).  Most questions are worded, "What is the superlative like "best" or "most" + optional adjective like "successful" + a noun like "way" or "effect" of blah, blah, blah."  All together it's something like this, "What is the most beneficial insect to the earth?"
